The Pros And Cons Of Installing Retractable Truck Steps On Your Truck Or SUV

If you have a truck or SUV, it may be high off of the ground. This can make it challenging for children, the elderly or those who are on the shorter side to get in and out of your vehicle. One option is to install truck running boards alongside both sides of the truck. An alternative option is to install one or more retractable truck steps. Learning the pros and cons of both options will allow you to determine which is the better option for your vehicle. Read on to learn a couple of the pros and cons associated with installing retractable truck steps on your truck or SUV.

The Cons of Installing Retractable Truck Steps on Your Truck or SUV

  • They Don't Support As Much Weight

One of the disadvantages to retractable truck steps is that they do not typically support as much weight as a truck running board. If you have kids that are using the step to get in and out of the car, this may not be a big deal. But if you have a larger family member, this is important to keep in mind. Always pay attention to what the weight limits of both retractable steps and running boards are in this situation.

  • They Won't Increase the Value of Your Truck

The second downside to retractable steps is that they do not increase the value of the truck when you go to resell it. On the other hand, truck running boards do help to increase the value of the truck and typically have a return on investment when installed. If you plan on selling your truck in the near future, this is something to keep in mind.

The Pros of Installing Retractable Truck Steps on Your Truck or SUV

  • Truck Steps are Cheaper Than Running Boards

If you or family are struggling to get in and out of your truck or SUV, but money is tight, you may want to go with the cheapest option. If this is the case, truck steps may be perfect for you. The steps themselves are cheaper than running boards and the installation costs also tend to be lower.

  • They Can Be Removed

The other benefit to retractable trucks steps is that they can be removed. The steps are installed on the bottom side of your SUV or truck. When the steps are removed, the holes that were drilled to install the step are not visible. This is not the case with truck running boards, which are installed on the side of the truck. You can't remove these without having permanent damage to your trucks panels. If you want the option to remove the stepping mechanism in the future, retractable steps are a better choice.

Both truck running boards and retractable truck steps have their place. While one may be ideal for one person, the other option may be the better choice for someone else. Taking the time to learn the pros and cons will help you make an educated decision about which step option will assist your passengers into getting into or out of your truck or SUV.
