The Right Way To Jumpstart A Vehicle

Did you find yourself turning your car on and nothing happened? This is likely due to a common problem where the battery in your car is dead. Thankfully, the battery is not completely dead and requires replacement, since you likely just left york flights on and the battery drained until it was empty. The solution is to jumpstart your vehicle with the help of another vehicle or a jumper pack. The procedure to follow in both situations is the same, which is why it helps to know these tips on how to jump your vehicle the right way.

Prepare The Vehicles

You'll want to start by getting the vehicles in the right position. This will involve pulling up the working vehicle to your vehicle so that the hoods are as close to each other as possible. You'll also want to turn both vehicles off and put on the emergency brake, just to be safe.

Attach The Jumper Cables

You always start by connecting the red positive cable to the positive battery terminal of the car with the dead battery. Then connect that same cable to the working vehicle's positive battery terminal.  You then connect the black negative jumper cable to the working vehicle's negative battery terminal. The opposite end of the negative cable should be attached to a piece of metal on the vehicle with the dead battery, such as a bracket or bolt underneath the hood.

Start The Vehicles

The next step is to turn on the vehicle with the working battery.  Let the car run for a couple of minutes while occasionally revving the engine.  This will get the electricity flowing to the jumper cables and into the drained battery. You should then start up the vehicle with the dead battery and turn on the car.

Keep in mind that it may be difficult starting up the vehicle with a dead battery at first.  Only try doing it a couple of times, and if it doesn't work you'll need to give it a rest because the battery needs more electricity. The vehicle should eventually start running again once there is enough electricity to start the engine.

Disconnect The Jumper Cables

You'll want to disconnect the jumper cables in the reverse order that you attached them. This means you start by removing the black grounding cable on the dead vehicle and end by removing the red cable on the dead vehicle.  Doing this in the wrong order can cause a huge spark to occur.

Now all that's left to do is drive your car around for a while and charge the battery. You can also leave the car parked and idling as well, but it may take longer to charge the battery enough to not require a jump.
